Mercury Hazards. While mercury is a highly toxic substance, only a very small amount is used in fluorescent lamps and HID lamps. There is no risk to your health when the lamps are unbroken but care needs to be taken if the lamps are broken. The best defense is to handle the lamps with care to avoid breakage.
