Common use of Meaning of Words Clause in Contracts

Meaning of Words. Unless otherwise stated in the Contract Documents, words which have well-known, technical or construction industry meanings are used in accordance with such recognized meanings. Whenever in the Contract Documents the words “directed,” “required,” “permitted,” “ordered,” “designated,” “prescribed,” or words of like import are used, it shall be understood that the direction, requirement, permission, order, designation, or prescription of the Engineer is intended, and similarly the words “approved,” “acceptable,” “satisfactory,” or words of like import, shall mean approved or acceptable to, or satisfactory to the Engineer unless otherwise expressly stated.
