Moreover, social relations and structures everywhere evolve over time, creating new variations. It is striking, though, that men have always had a leading position in the majority of cultures, while women have been to a lesser or greater degree subordinated. It was not until the 19th century that groups of women openly and systematically started defying the existing social gender division, and resisting oppression. To better understand the present position of women in Mexican society, and in particular of indigenous women, it is important to look at certain historical evolutions, and to place current research in the context of feminism, including indigenous feminism. The history of feminism can be divided in different phases. Usually, the concept of \u2018waves\u2019 is used to indicate the different periods, however, it is important to realize that this term should be used with caution. Different types of activism existed and still exist simultaneously, and others overlap (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587, 2000: 210). The division in waves is therefore only used to indicate general trends. As there are specialized studies discussing feminist history in detail, the goal here is not to give a complete overview, but rather to point to certain trends that are relevant for this work. A brief overview will be given of the history of the feminist movement in the West, looking at general evolutions in Europe, in particular the United Kingdom, and in the United States of America, both precursors regarding women\u2019s rights. In Mexico, feminism developed almost in parallel with the movement in Europe and the U.S.A., but showed certain particularities worth explaining to understand the current situation of women in Mexico. In colonial times, some individual actions of female resistance can be noted in Mexico. In the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a first wave of feminist initiatives of Mexican women who openly started striving for the improvement of their rights. In her work Contra viento y marea: el movimiento feminista en M\u00e9xico hasta 1940 (2002), \u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 \u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 writes extensively about the first period of the feminist struggle, starting around the time of the Mexican Independence. It shows the long tradition of Mexican feminism, but also that feminism has often been used for political purposes rather than for the real improvement of the position of women. \u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2019 very complete study is one of the few on that period, therefore the following overview will be based primarily on this reference work. The first feminist wave was followed by a second, and a third wave. The overview of second and third wave feminism presented here is primarily based on the work Cuatro vertientes del feminismo en M\u00e9xico. More studies on this period are available, but the work by \u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 has been one of the most exhaustive studies recently published on the subject. In her work she divides Mexican feminism in four main currents: historical feminism (ca. 1960-1980), popular feminism (ca. 1980-1988), civil feminism (starting ca. 1980), and indigenous feminism (starting ca. 1990). These different currents were always the result of a specific political climate with its specific social changes. \u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 points out that there are also many smaller currents, such as lesbian feminism, academic feminism, feminism that originated in political parties, Catholic Church, mass media, public administration, business world, etcetera. Unfortunately, the great diversity of currents had a negative effect on the feminist movement; instead of forming a united front, many groups were excluded. Finally, the mo\u02bbo were narrow strips of land within an \u02bbili. The land holding of a tenant (in Hawaiian, \u2587\u2587\u2587 \u02bb\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587) was called a kuleana (from Hawaiian, \u201cright, privilege\u201d) (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 1995:61). The project area is located in the ahupua\u02bba of Waikap\u016b, district of Wailuku (P\u016b\u02bbali Komohana). As suggested in the previous section, the isthmus of Maui is characterized by comparatively dry conditions and paucity of perennial streams. Nonetheless, because of its strategic location between the two Maui mountains on the one hand, and the convenience of the Kahului harbor on the other, Wailuku District was important in Maui\u2019s Pre-Contact history. Control over Wailuku and Kahului, the traditional seats of chiefly power in the West of Maui, necessitated control over the entire district of Wailuku. In addition, since the West Maui Mountains provide a number of perennial streams, large scale agriculture was made possible in Late Post- Contact and Modern times. As a result, the district contains substantial archeological and historical record. This section will outline in short the historical context of the project area, the settlement patterns before and after contact with the West, the agricultural practices, and the historical record associated with land ownership. Archaeological data indicate that the initial settlement of the Hawaiian Islands by Polynesians occurred on the windward shores around the 10th century C.E., with populations extending into leeward areas at later periods (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 2011). Thus, the 10th century would be the earliest date to which human presence could be expected in the project area and its vicinity. More likely, however, it would be traced to the early period of agricultural development, which on Maui began circa 1200-1400 C.E. (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 1985:142). Despite its strategic political and military importance, the isthmus was not especially productive economically until the large-scale irrigation projects of the 19th century (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 1985: 135). Traditional Hawaiian economy was based on agricultural production, marine exploitation, and raising livestock, in addition to collecting wild plants and birds. Settlements were concentrated in river valleys most amenable to wet kalo (taro, Colocasia esculenta) cultivation which also incorporated pond fields and irrigation canals. Windward areas with higher precipitation permitted the growing of kalo (taro, Colocasia esculenta), k\u014d (sugar cane, Saccharum officinarum) and mai\u02bba (banana, Musa spp.). Pre-Contact populations also frequently integrated brackish and freshwater fishponds with taro (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587-\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 1987: 325), and according to Handy and Handy (1972:496) the largest continuous area of wetland taro cultivation in Hawai\u02bbi extended from Waihe\u02bbe to Wailuku. Waikap\u016b Stream also supported it into the early 20th century (Handy and Handy (1972:497). The Wailuku District offers favorable conditions for aqua- and agricultural activity, and once supported a substantial population (see the section Previous Archeology): the settlements of Wailuku and Kahului north of the project area represented one of the only two or three Pre-Contact population centers on Maui (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 1981:198-199). The environs of Wailuku from Waihe\u02bbe Stream to the north to Waikap\u016b to the south were once known as na wai \u2018eh\u0101 (from Hawaiian, \u201cof four waters\u201d), referring to the four rivers that drain the eastern slopes of Mauna Kah\u0101l\u0101wai (Handy and Handy 1972). The district is frequently mentioned in historical texts and in the oral tradition as politically and ceremonially important (\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 1981, \u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587\u2587 1985): the town itself was considered a \u201cchiefly center\u201d with many of the ali\u02bbi and much of the district\u2019s population residing near \u2018\u012aao Valley and lower Wailuku (Sterling 1998:90). In addition, in Pre-Contact times, a number of trails typically extended from the coast to the mountains, facilitating travel and linking communities both economically and socially. In pre- Contact times Wailuku and Kahului were linked with L\u0101hain\u0101 on the opposite side of the mountains, and it is likely that such lines of communication extended over the isthmus to Ma\u02bbalaea Bay and K\u012bhei (Handy 1940:114). Both the extended wetland taro of Wailuku and Kahului\u2019s Kanah\u0101 Pond (from Hawaiian, \u201cthe shattered\u201d) makai (seaward) of the project area allowed for the development of significant economic resources along the coast.
