Farewell. Editorial THE College of Health Sciences paid tribute to Superintendent- General of Health in KwaZulu- Natal, Professor Xxxxxx Xxxxx- Xxxxxxxx, at a modest function towards the end of last year. Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College, Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxx Xxx, acknowledged the significant contribution made by Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxx-Xxxxxxxx to health in general and to UKZN. A graduate of the University, Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxx-Xxxxxxxx is a specialist Obstetrician and Xxxxx- cologist and is the longest serving Head and Superintendent-General of Health in the country. He champ- ioned several major projects that include the building of two new hospitals, the Xxxxxxx Xxxxxx and the Inkosi Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx Central Hospital – the latter is one of the most sophisticated hospitals in the world. In March 2005, sod turning ceremonies marked the depart- ment’s plans to build two more new hospitals in the province, the Xx Xxxxxx Xxxx Memorial Hospital in KwaMashu and the Xx Xxxx X Dube Memorial Hospital in Inanda at an estimated cost of R227 million. Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxx-Xxxxxxxx said that he would cherish fond mem- ories of UKZN, in particular his xxxx mater, the Xxxxxx X Xxxxxxx School of Medicine. He applauded the School for its many achieve- ments and its contribution to the health sectors and human rights. Prior to his appointment as Superintendent-General of Health in KwaZulu-Natal, Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxx-Xxxxxxxx served as head of the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Xxxxxx X Xxxxxxx School of Medicine. - Xxxxx Xxxxxxx Partnerships make us a relevant global player IN this bumper February/March edition of ukzndaba, a whole range of issues relevant to teaching, research and outreach have been covered. The most significant of these is the partnership between UKZN and the eThekwini Municipality, given effect by the City’s willingness to contribute R5 million to the University over a five-year period. The money is to be used by Masters and Doctoral students undertaking research into water and sanitation challenges facing the region. The partnership is significant for a number of reasons. Firstly, it confirms our intention to produce knowledge of and for our local context. Secondly, it underlines our insistence on relevant knowledge production which impacts on communities from which we draw our students and staff.
