The amount of the Pell Grant can change every year, the amount of a full-time award can change in the future. However, once a member earns an award, the dollar value of that award will not increase. For all programs, award amounts for part-time terms of service vary based upon the length of the required term of service. Education Award. When an AmeriCorps member successfully completes a term of service, he or she will receive an education award that can be used to attend qualified institutions of higher education or training or to repay qualified student loans. An education award can be used in the following ways, or in combination: • To repay qualified existing or future student loans; • To pay all or part of the current cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education (including certain vocational programs); or • To pay current expenses while participating in an approved school-to-work program. A member who leaves for compelling personal circumstances (as determined by the New Jersey AmeriCorps Xxxxxx Leader Program Staff) and serves at least 15% of their term, may be eligible for a prorated award based on the number of service hours completed. Members may receive up to two education awards, and only for the first two terms of service, regardless of whether they are for full-time, part-time or reduced part-time terms. Even if the member did not complete one of the first two terms of service, they cannot receive an education award for a third term. “Cost of attending” may include tuition, room and board, books, supplies, transportation, and other various expenses. The financial aid office of each school has information on expenses for specific academic programs, and that office determines the cost of attendance for the school. For example, if all or part of the award is used for college in the Spring of 2001, when taxes are filed for 2001, taxes must be paid on the portion of the award used. However, the member may be able to take advantage of the Hope Scholarship Credit or the Lifelong Learning Circle Credit. Those credits may provide the member with significant tax relief. Both the Department of Education and the Internal Revenue Service have information on these tax provisions. The Corporation for National Service does not deduct taxes from the award, but in late January a 1099 form for the member becomes available via the My AmeriCorps portal. The 1099 Form reflects the amount that the National Service Trust reports to the IRS as taxable miscellaneous income. If you have questions about how to file taxes for your award, contact your local IRS office. The College of New Jersey and the Xxxxxxx & Xxxxxxx X.
