Chronic Disease. Many studies have suggested that refugees carry a significant burden of chronic diseases, when compared to other surrounding communities, especially those who are uninsured (Yun et al., 2012). According to the Center for Managing Chronic Disease, chronic disease is defined as longHlasting conditions that can be controlled but not cured (The Centers for Managing Chronic Disease, 2011). Common chronic diseases within the refugee community include hypertension, overweight/obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and anemia (Amara & Xxxxxxx, 2014; Xxxxxx, Xxxxxx, Xxxxx, & Xxxxx, 2014; Xxxxxxx et al., 2010; Shah et al., 2013; Yun et al., 2012). One study conducted in 2012 found that 50% of adult refugees had at least one chronic nonHcommunicable disease and approximately 10% had three or more.   • Human Leukocyte Antigen Testing This plan covers human leukocyte antigen testing for A, B, and DR antigens once per member per lifetime to establish a member’s bone marrow transplantation donor suitability in accordance with R.I. General Law §27-20-36. The testing must be performed in a facility that is: • accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks or its successors; and • licensed under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act as it may be amended from time to time. At the time of testing, the person being tested must complete and sign an informed consent form that also authorizes the results of the test to be used for participation in the National Marrow Donor program.

The Employer will provide training and ongoing education in communicable disease recognition, use of personal protective equipment, decontamination of equipment, and disposal of hazardous waste.
