Chai definition

Chai means “to demolish.” The Chinese ideogram, fl, is painted on buildings markedfor destruction. It is not unique to Hohhot. However, during the time that I lived there, the foreign community in Hohhot adopted the word into English. In fact, the summer of 2001, at the beginning of the WDP, became affectionately known as “The Summer of Chai” because of the mass destruction of buildings that took place in Hohhot.
Chai or “tsai” (妻): means wife (Leung Sai Lun v Leung May Ling (1999) 2 HKCFAR 94 at 102G, 105A).
