Ascertained Merit Points. Ascertained merit points are above and beyond the 100 points of the promotional examinations and shall be added to the candidate’s final combined score. Candidates may receive up to a maximum of five (5) points for the 2015 and beyond promotional exam cycles. A person requesting ascertained merit points holds the responsibility of providing proof of merit achievement, i.e., diploma, certificate, license, to Division III, prior to the initiation of this application process.Points:Bachelor’s degree in Fire related field 5 points Associate’s degree in Fire Science/Fire Technology 4 points Core classes required for Fire Officer 1 or 2 certification 0.5 points eachEquivalent classes include the following: Instructor 1 and 2, Strategy and Tactics 1 and 2, Management/Leadership 1, 2, 3 and 4 and Fire Prevention Principles 1.Other approved Fire Officer courses 0.5 points each The initial list of “other approved Fire Officer courses” will be selected by the Promotional Review Committee consisting of 1 Captain and 1 Battalion chief (selected by the Union) and two Staff level Chiefs (selected by the City). The list of approved courses for the 2015 exam will be posted by June 1, 2013. The list shall be made available to anyone who requests it and posted in the training division. Once a course is approved, it can never be removed from the list. Furthermore, the Committee shall meet during each testing cycle to consider adding additional courses for the next promotional exam. All approved courses added to the initial list must be approved by the Committee and posted two years prior to promotional exam.
