The presence of the drugs indicated by a positive screen result must be confirmed using an appropriate technique, recognised by drug testing experts. A high degree of sensitivity and specificity is required and proposals must clearly state tolerance levels in relation to all cut-off levels to be used. Evidence to show these must be submitted as part of your proposal. documentation.

Analysis / Confirmation. Positive test results must be interpreted in light of medication declared by the prisoner. It must be stated clearly whether that medication could account for the positive result obtained. Some positive results may be due to medication (prescribed or over-the-counter) or be due to dietary causes. Please explain how you will account for this. Concateno UK Prior to reporting, all confirmation tests will be reviewed and certified as accurate by an Authorising Scientist. Where a sample is below the agreed cut-off concentration, it will be reported as negative. If a sample is positive, the report will include the screen test results for the drug and adulteration/dilution checks, as well as the levels of drug detected in the confirmation tests. It will show any medication declared and an interpretation of the result will include a statement about the relevance of such medication. Finally the report will indicate the charges, and/or actions that are appropriate, and the rules that apply, using the list of defined responses. Many positive screen results are caused by licit prescribed medication. For this reason, results that are due to medication can be mitigated. Only drug groups that are likely to be caused by medication and could not also be caused by illicit use of class A drugs can be mitigated. For example, benzodiazepines, methadone, barbiturates and buprenorphine are likely to be due to prescribed medications such as diazepam, nitrazepam, clonazepam, physeptone, phenobarbitone / primidone or temgesic etc. As long as the medication has been prescribed by healthcare it is possible to "mitigate" the screen positive result which effectively turns the positive screen result recorded on the KPI data to negative. xxxx redacted text xxxx. Drug classes where results could be due to prescribed medication but also include abused drugs may not be mitigated, as the licit medication may be used to mask drug abuse. For example, co-codamol and co-dydramol use may be claimed in an attempt to hide heroin misuse or pseudoephedrine in cough/cold preparations may be used to mask amphetamine/ecstasy misuse. Therefore opiates, amphetamines, cannabis or cocaine positive screens cannot be mitigated. To mitigate the screen positive result the screen action sheet should be returned to Concateno with the mitigated portion selected and the relevant medication, dose and last date of use prior to sample collection detailed. Analysis / Confirmation. Where following a positive screening test the prisoner denies using illicit drugs the laboratory must carry out a confirmation test - up to approximately 15,000 samples per annum. Please demonstrate and provide evidence to show how the laboratory will cope with this workload.
