Alert. A significantproblem in any ALERT network is the potential loss of sensor data due to loss of either a repeater or a base station site. This can happen more often than not during rainfall events, particularly at exposed repeater sites. The Satellite ALERT Concentrator addresses this single point of failure. Monterey County has already implemented this device near the ALERT repeater on Mt. Toro. The device contains an ALERT receiver that collects data local sensors, time-stamps each packet and sends the data in a real time over a satellite transceiver and reliable telecomm connection to OneRain’ s Harbor. The Satellite ALERT Concentrator stores a pass list for collection and of only those sensor that are needed via OneRain’s real-time satellite network service. The information is transmitted to the OneRain Harbor with latency on the order of 20 seconds. Once in OneRain’s Harbor, the data are available immediately via Contrail Web as a data feed back to the DIADvisor base station at the County. The presence of one of these devices within the County’s gaging network provides a robust, parallel path that mitigates any repeater or base station failure. When used with the OneRain Harbor and Contrail Web, data the sensors collected by the Santa Xxxx County real-time rainfall data system Page 5 0213 . , Concentrator will delivered with no interruption to the County via the Internet, regardless of what happens at the Mt. Toro ALERT repeater or at the base station. Santa Xxxx County is likely in a good position to share the Mt. Satellite ALERT Concentrator with Monterey County, who installed it last year. Santa Xxxx County will benefit greatly with no additional hardware required, and the that Monterey County is already incurring can be shared among the two entities. This is a win-win scenario. Tracking System Performance Preventive maintenance is a necessary ongoing activity for remote sensing stations. Unfortunately, preventive maintenance doesn’t catch all problems and sometimes breakdown maintenance becomes a necessity. However, breakdown maintenance can be time consuming, costly and cause increased risk while the site is down unexpectedly. Effective predictive maintenance uses many techniques, some which are field activities and some based solely on telemetered data. OneRain’s professional staff has developed a toolset, Contrail Insight, to track system performance and plan predictive maintenance of ALERT sensors. Using Contrail Insight, the County’s oversight ...
