Achievements ▪ Achievements. NOC Sri Lanka has now a very constructive policy document on SHAP in local languages which was nowhere before. A mechanism including policy, hotline, a committee to inquire related to harassment and abuse issues is well-developed now. It was appreciated by a parliamentarian in Sri Lanka parliament as well. An island wide campaign was also done through media – newspapers, TVs, radios and social media. This publicity has given a wide range of awareness to many citizens in Sri Lanka, also to some of my foreign friends. National Federations are adapting the policy which means the project started to achieve its success. Olympic Solidarity funded USD 19,000 after submitting our proposal. Also, campaign stickers are displayed on many locker-rooms in the gyms in Sri Lanka, especially at the elite athletes’ training centers. Moreover, 1000+ Facebook friends, athletes and officials supported for the Facebook profile frame changing campaign – that would have reached more than 50000 Pax. Since this is a long-term project, the complete success will take time, but awareness is there and the people who are involved in such harassment and abuse are now alerted and it is expected the number of cases will reduce in upcoming years. ▪ Expected Impacts There are many sexual harassment and abuse cases in Sri Lanka among athletes but they are shy to bring them out. But after this campaign, it is very much expected the number of cases will dramatically fall and that shall lead to the athletes’ (especially female) safety and creates a safe zone for sports in Sri Lanka for children. Moreover, this shall give a big space for female athletes and children to take part in sports at any level without any fear in Sri Lanka. Ultimately, it will certainly improve the quality of sports in Sri Lanka.
