Substantially limited definition

Substantially limited means that a significant restriction on the duration, manner or condition under which an individual can perform a major life activity exists when compared to the average person's ability to perform that same major life activity. Temporary impairments that take significantly longer than normal to heal, long-term impairments, or potentially long-term impairments of indefinite duration may be disabilities if they are severe. “Major life activities” are determined by the court in each case but generally include functions such as caring for one's self, performing manual tasks, walking, sitting, standing, lifting, reaching, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning and working.
Substantially limited means that the person’s participation in the activity is significantly restricted.8 The restriction does not need to completely prevent the disabled person from participating in the activity, but it must do more than merely cause him or her to participate in a different manner. 9 If a disability is corrected to the point that it does not substantially limit a major life activity, it no longer counts as a disability under the ADA.10
Substantially limited means ‘unable to perform a major life activity that the average person in the general population can perform’; or ‘significantly restricted as to the condition, manner or duration under which an individual can perform a particular major life activity as compared to the condition, manner, or duration under which the average person in the general population can perform that same major life activity.’
