Upgrade of WWTP Sample Clauses

Upgrade of WWTP. The City of Košice WWTP was built in the sixties for BOD and suspended solids removal. With the increase in the pollution load in the eighties it was decided to upgrade the WWTP in order to comply with more stringent norms. The construction of new facilities is currently ongoing. The first part consisting of a full sludge handling facility and of approximately one third of the water line was finalised in 2001. Today, 35-40% of the load is conveyed to this part, whereas the remainder is sent to the old facility. In order to achieve compliance with the EU standards for effluents in sensitive areas, the nitrogen and phosphorus removal facilities will have to be enhanced. The nitrogen removal capacity will be increased by the extension of the secondary clarification capacity; four extra clarifiers will be built, increasing the number of units from 6 to 10. The extension of clarifiers will also involve the installation of all necessary piping to the clarifiers, for the return of activated sludge to the biological system, as well as channelling for the clarified water. The phosphorus removal will be achieved by a hybrid biological/chemical phosphorus removal system. The biological system will require the construction of a 4-tank in series anaerobic selector. The surplus activated sludge piping will be rebuilt in order to convey the surplus activated sludge directly to the anaerobic sludge digestion facility. A chemical storage tank for ferric salts will be installed and will serve as a back up facility for the water line, but will also provide chemical dephosphatation of the sludge waters. The chemical dosage pump to the water line will be controlled by the available on-line phosphate meter
