Our Commitment. ASIA has a support room called the ‘R&R’, which stands for reset and return. It is a quiet, healthy place to visit when students are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just want a calming space to work. The RR room is also home to our Youth Support Worker’s office who works with the students who visit in coordination with our Indigenous Support worker. Indigenous students are encouraged to use this space for social, emotional, or academic support on a drop in basis as needed. In addition to this space, ASIA has an Indigenous classroom where our Indigenous support worker provides a variety of supports for our Indigenous students ranging from meals and student connection, to academic support and championing a variety of cultural activities inside and outside the classroom setting. Our Indigenous classroom is in the process of seeking a name and logo. ASIA strives to provide our Indigenous students with an equitable learning experience by being mindful of the work needing to be done through the district’s equity framework. We also strive to be equitable by building relationships with our students and their families. This allows us to identify potential barriers the students might face such as school supplies, meals, permission forms, or bussing. Staff are then in a position of understanding and can step in to ensure that our indigenous students are advocated for and have the things they need. XXXX is working toward establishing legacy art pieces such as the grade 8 transition paddle project where local Indigenous community members are invited to participate in the student’s learning. This way, our relationship with our students, their families, and their community is strengthened further.
