Fine Aggregate. The Fineness Modulus (FM) of sand shall be 2.0-3.50 as per latest IS-383. It shall be free from harmful impurities and deleterious substances. In case fine dust and silt is found more than 4% the same shall be washed thoroughly before use.
Fine Aggregate a. Fine aggregate shall consist of natural or crushed sand conforming to IS 383. The sand shall be clean, sharp, hard, strong and durable and shall be free from dust, vegetable substances, adherent coating, clay, alkali, organic matter, mica, salt, or other deleterious substances, which can be injurious to the setting qualities/strength /durability of concrete.

It shall meet the requirements of B.S. 882 and its grading shall be within the limits of one of grading zones 1, 2 or 3 given in Table 2 of B.S.882. In addition, it shall have a specific gravity of not less than 2.5, shall not contain more than 5 percent by volume of shells or shell fragments. The fine aggregate delivered to the batching plant shall have a uniform and stable moisture content. When necessary, or when required by the Engineer, all fine aggregate shall be washed in clean water, before being incorporated in the Works.

It shall be clean, sharp, hard, strong and durable and free from dust, vegetable substances, adherent coating, clay, loam, alkali, organic matter, mica, soluble sulphate, gypsum or any other deleterious substances which can be injurious to the setting qualities / strength / durability of concrete. Use of sea sand is prohibited.

Fine Aggregate. (a) The Contractor shall be responsible for testing the fine aggregates to establish conformance to these specifications, and the results of these tests shall be provided to the Contract Administrator if requested. All aggregates shall comply with CAN/CSA A23.1.
